What is the purpose of this professional?

The software developer provides a usable digital service. He does not just write lines of code: he clarifies needs, chooses a technical solution, builds features, verifies that they work, and evolves them. Without him, an application idea remains a specification document or a PowerPoint presentation.

In a company, he can automate an invoicing process, connect a mobile application to a payment system, create a portal for clients, secure user access, or improve the performance of a database. His value is often measured by the reliability of the service, the speed of correction, and the ability to maintain the software over time.

A typical day

Example of a typical day, not an observed report.

  1. 9 AM check tickets, review sprint priorities, and prepare blocking points for the team.
  2. 9:30 AM participate in the daily meeting with the project manager, product owner, testers, and sometimes a UX/UI designer, for user experience and user interface.
  3. 10 h develop a feature, such as a form, a REST API, a React screen, or a server-side business rule.
  4. 12 h push the code to Git, open a merge request, and respond to code review comments.
  5. 14 h 30 fix a bug detected in testing, write a unit test, and check the impact on other modules.
  6. 16 h 30 document the change, prepare for production deployment with the DevOps team, and conduct a brief technical watch.

What studies?

There is no single degree to become a software developer. Common pathways include computer science, software engineering, information systems, web development, mobile development, or networking with application specialization. The observed levels range from bac+2 to bac+5: BTS IT Services for Organizations, professional title of web and mobile web developer, BUT in computer science, bachelor's degree in computer science, professional license, bachelor's degree, master's degree in computer science, or engineering school.

Recruiters also look for concrete evidence: GitHub or GitLab projects, deployed applications, participation in open source projects, internships, apprenticeships, portfolios, and the ability to explain technical choices. Certifications such as AWS Certified Developer Associate, Microsoft Certified Azure Developer Associate, Oracle Certified Professional Java SE Developer, or Scrum certifications can help in certain contexts, but they do not replace practice or project experience.

Where does he work?

The software developer works for software publishers, digital services companies, often referred to as ESN, startups, fintechs, banks, insurance companies, telecom operators, administrations, public agencies, NGOs, international organizations, digital agencies, or companies with an information systems department. In Abidjan, Douala, Dakar, or Libreville, the missions may involve payment, administrative portals, field data collection, e-commerce, internal management tools, or mobile platforms.

What is the salary?

In France, Apec indicates that for executive offers for developer F/H, 80% of the proposed annual gross salaries are between €34,000 and €53,000, with an average of €43,000. A France Travail offer for a senior Java Full Stack developer in Paris, requiring 9 years of experience, displayed €40,000 to €50,000 gross annually over 12 months. These French ranges do not automatically translate to Gabon, Cameroon, Senegal, or Côte d'Ivoire.

For Francophone Africa, reliable data remains less homogeneous. The 2024-2025 Salary Guide from Grey Search Africa indicates, in Côte d'Ivoire, for a C#/.NET, Java, PHP, or JS studies and development engineer, monthly ranges of 380,000 to 1,200,000 FCFA for less than 5 years, 412,000 to 1,810,000 FCFA for 5 to 10 years, and 475,000 to 2,012,000 FCFA beyond 10 years. For Senegal, the same source mentions, for mobile/web developer, a low salary of 280,000 FCFA, an average salary of 643,000 FCFA, and a high salary of 1,540,000 FCFA, without seniority details on this line.

For Gabon, Cameroon, and other Francophone African countries, no sufficiently reliable and homogeneous national grid has been found in the consulted sources. Many local offers describe the missions, technologies, and expected experience, but do not systematically display the salary.

The realities to know

  • Monitoring is continuous: frameworks, language versions, cloud, and artificial intelligence tools evolve rapidly.
  • Technical debt is common: you may take over an old application that is poorly tested or poorly documented.
  • Business deadlines may be shorter than the actual time needed to code, test, and secure.
  • A bug can block a service, expose data, or create a security vulnerability.
  • In a small structure, you may be both analyst, developer, database administrator, support, and user trainer.
  • Cloud tools, paid APIs, licenses, and documentation in English create a practical and budgetary dependency.

And in Africa?

From the perspective of Libreville, Abidjan, Dakar, or Douala, the software developer is not just a startup profile. They work in banks for payment and compliance applications, in telecoms for customer portals, in administrations for e-services, in NGOs for data collection, and in SMEs to automate management.

Digital transformation in Africa is progressing, but it remains linked to very concrete realities: connection quality, computer costs, access to cloud services, international payment methods, availability of senior profiles, and organizational maturity. The World Bank emphasizes the importance of connectivity, public digital infrastructures, and digital usage for jobs. The GSMA also reminds us that mobile internet adoption in Africa is hindered by the cost of devices and digital skills.

Regional or international remote work exists, but it is earned through reliability: well-used Git, clear written communication, technical English, autonomy, respect for time zones, and the ability to deliver without waiting for constant supervision. For a young African graduate, a good portfolio can open as many doors as a long list of qualifications.

Is this job for you?

  • Do you enjoy solving a problem by breaking it down step by step?
  • Are you willing to spend time testing, proofreading, and correcting, not just creating?
  • Are you ready to regularly learn new tools without waiting for formal training each time?
  • Can you explain a technical constraint to a non-technical person?
  • Can you remain calm when a delivery is approaching or when a bug appears in production?

If you enjoy building, learning by doing, and quickly seeing the impact of your work on real users, software development can be a solid path. However, it requires discipline, patience, and a true culture of quality.
