Certificate then diploma UNIVGA: which order to choose?

In many professional paths, the question arises before the choice of training: should one start with a short skill, or aim immediately for academic recognition? At UNIVGA, the online catalog distinguishes between professional certificates and degree programs, which prevents them from being lumped together.

The sensitive point lies in the order. A certificate may be sufficient to specialize, test a field, or prepare for an external certification. But it does not replace a Bachelor-Master-Doctorate (LMD) degree, and the UNIVGA sources consulted do not document any automatic conversion into credits.

Starting situation Most realistic order Point of vigilance
Need for a specific operational skill Professional certificate only Ensure that the objective does not require an academic degree.
Hesitation about a field, for example cybersecurity Certificate, then degree if the project is confirmed Do not assume or automatic exemption from teaching units.
Objective Bac+3, Bac+5, continuation of studies or academic recognition Degree first The certificate can come later as a professional specialization.
Market aiming for an external proof, for example Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) Preparatory training and certification from an organization External certification depends on the certifying organization, not just the training certificate.

Certificate or degree: the right order depends on the problem to be solved.

The UNIVGA catalog presents two families that should not be confused. On one side, degree programs: Professional License, Bachelor of Science, Professional Master, Master of Science, and MBA. On the other side, professional certificates by sector, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and data, management, finance, law, quality-hygiene-safety-environment, compliance, construction and public works, logistics, health, digital, or humanitarian.

This distinction is not merely administrative. It changes the way of studying, the type of proof obtained, and the possible use of the final document. The simplest and most cautious formula is: the degree structures an academic path; the certificate certifies a skill or professional specialization.

The professional certificate: short, targeted, skill-oriented.

The UNIVGA professional certificate is suitable when the need is specific: to upgrade skills, strengthen an existing position, test a field, or prepare for an organization's exam. The UNIVGA FAQ indicates that certification training provides a certificate of competence and does not constitute an LMD university degree.

A telling example: the Professional Certificate in Offensive Cybersecurity, CEH preparation, aims for operational skills and preparation for the CEH certification from EC-Council. The sheet recommends a background in TCP/IP networks and experience in IT or systems, although these prerequisites are not presented as mandatory.

The degree: academic path, credits, and defense.

The degree meets another need: to build structured academic recognition. The Professional License page in cybersecurity mentions a curriculum at the Professional License level, thesis and professional defense, in line with academic supervision.

According to the FAQ, UNIVGA degree programs are more structured than certificates: dedicated teachers, video conferences, supervised assignments, personalized academic calendar, and defense for the relevant levels. This framework is more suitable when further studies or a level requirement is at stake.

Three scenarios for choosing without turning the certificate into a tunnel

1. Certificate only: when the skill is sufficient.

The certificate can be a complete choice, not just a step before something else. This is the case for an employee already holding a degree who needs to add a skill, for a technician who wants to strengthen a practice, or for a profile seeking preparation for an organization's certification. In this scenario, the decisive question is not the prestige of the path, but the direct utility of the targeted skill.

However, the certificate is not suitable if the real need is a degree, an academic level, or an administrative condition. When a job offer, a competition, an administration, or a university expressly requires a degree, the certificate should not be presented as equivalent.

2. Certificate then degree: useful for testing, not automatic.

Starting with a certificate can be defensible when it serves as a orientation test. A person attracted to cybersecurity can take a skills-oriented certificate before deciding if a Professional License in cybersecurity fits their project. The certificate can also consolidate foundations before a longer curriculum.

The limit must be clearly stated: the UNIVGA sources consulted do not document an automatic pathway from a professional certificate to, nor an automatic exemption from teaching units in a License or Master. The certificate can be a step of orientation or specialization; it should not be presented as an automatic pathway to the degree.

3. Degree then certificate: coherent when the main objective is academic.

If the central objective is a License, a Master, an MBA, continuation of studies, or structured academic recognition, starting with the degree may be more logical. The certificate will then come as a professional specialization, preparation for an external exam, or complementary proof in a specific field.

This option avoids a common mistake: accumulating short certificates when the targeted market primarily demands an academic level. Distance does not mean the same pace for everyone: the certificate is more autonomous; the degree is more structured, with an academic calendar, video conferences, and defense when the level requires it.

External certification: do not confuse preparation and issuance.

Some UNIVGA certificates prepare for certifications from specialized organizations. In cybersecurity, EC-Council presents CEH as the Certified Ethical Hacker certification. UNIVGA states that it is an Academia Partner of EC-Council and offers preparations for official exams in this field.

The nuance matters: a preparatory training is not always the external certification itself. The same logic applies to ISO standards, International Organization for Standardization: ISO specifies that it does not carry out certifications itself and does not issue certificates; certifications are performed by external certification bodies.

What to check before deciding

  • The real need: targeted skill, academic recognition, preparation for an external certification, or continuation of studies.
  • The nature of the final document: UNIVGA professional certificate, LMD diploma, private diploma, or certification issued by an external organization.
  • The requirements of the targeted market: some positions accept demonstrated competence, while others explicitly require a Bac+3, Bac+5, or a specific diploma.
  • The existence of a bridge: request written confirmation if it concerns, exemption from teaching units, or admission to a higher level.
  • The pace of learning: autonomy for certificates, more academic supervision for diplomas according to the information published by UNIVGA.
  • The potential external certification: identify the organization that actually issues the certification and the examination conditions.
