Rio Tinto accelerates five mining startups, the proof remains to be seen

Rio Tinto and Founders Factory select five mining startups. For Africa, the challenge is to test quickly without diluting on-ground responsibility. On October 5, 2026, Founders Factory and Rio Tinto announced the fifth cohort of their Mining Tech Accelerator, featuring five startups active in exploration, rapid metal measurement, geological risk monitoring, refining, and mining decision support.

The professional challenge is clear: shorten the time between a technological idea and an on-site test, without confusing experimentation with a mature industrial solution. For a HSE (health, safety, environment) manager or a mining project leader in Moanda, the question becomes very concrete: which data to trust, who validates the risk, and who responds if the tool is wrong?

What is it, concretely?

A mining accelerator is a testing ground organized between a large company and young enterprises. Startups receive capital, support, and potential access to industrial expertise. In this case, Founders Factory indicates that the program offers four months of operational support, operating from Perth and remotely, as well as possible access to Rio Tinto's skills and facilities in Western Australia.

What changes is the scope of innovation. Previously, a mine primarily purchased heavy equipment, already known software, or proven engineering services. Here, it tests sensors, measurement methods, artificial intelligence tools (software capable of helping to identify trends in data), and refining solutions earlier. However, the announcement remains a test of acceleration: it does not yet prove widespread industrial deployment.

Concrete case: what to do and what not to do

Questions to Ask Before Acting

  • When a recommendation from a sensor, artificial intelligence, or a startup influences an HSE, exploration, or investment decision, who bears the final responsibility?
  • Does the project correspond to a test, a commercial pilot, or an operational deployment?
  • Are the data used technical, personal, sensitive, or mixed?
  • Have the engineers, HSE managers, lawyers, and financiers validated the same level of risk?
  • Can the supplier simply explain the limitations of their tool and the situations in which they might be wrong?
  • Does the site have the connectivity, energy, and skills necessary to maintain the solution?
  • Does the contract specify data ownership, their location, audit rights, and the supplier's exit?
