UNIVGA degree or certificate: choose according to your profile

After the Bac, many first seek a recognizable diploma. When returning to work, the question changes: should one resume an academic cycle or aim for a specific skill that is more directly applicable at work? At UNIVGA, this choice arises quickly, as the catalog distinguishes between degree programs and certification training.

The issue is not to choose the most prestigious option, but the one that corresponds to your actual situation. A professional license commits you to a structured academic path. A professional certificate targets a specific skill. Preparation for external certification, in cybersecurity or compliance for example, follows yet another logic.

UNIVGA Campus: Does the LMS really help keep pace?

Certificate then diploma UNIVGA: which order to choose?

Starting situation First choice to consider Why To verify before deciding
High school graduate or holder of the Bac Professional Degree It corresponds to a structured degree program, announced online over three years, with pedagogical progression, professional thesis, and defense. Required documents, entry level, availability to follow an academic schedule, and coherence of the chosen specialty.
High school graduate wanting to test a sector Professional certificate, then possible reorientation The certificate allows targeting a skill or area before committing to a long degree cycle. The certificate does not replace an LMD license and does not guarantee automatic admission to a diploma.
Employee in activity aiming for a specific skill Professional Certificate UNIVGA describes certification training as being followed at one's own pace, without an imposed academic calendar. Exact objective: internal skill, job advancement, professional update, or preparation for external certification.
Employee returning to studies to obtain a diploma Professional license, if the entry level is compatible The degree format provides more support: teachers, videoconferences, monitored assignments, and defense for the relevant levels. Workload, academic justifications, family and professional constraints, expected recognition in the targeted country or organization.
Professional aiming for a sector certification Preparatory training for certification by an organization In cybersecurity, UNIVGA presents preparations related to EC-Council. In compliance, some programs focus on ISO standards. Distinguish between the training followed, the UNIVGA certificate, the external exam, and the certifying organization.

The real choice: degree, skill, or external certification

The UNIVGA catalog announces two main categories: degree programs and certification programs. This distinction is crucial. A professional license serves a different purpose than a skills certificate. It targets a different life timeline, requires different commitments, and produces a different type of document at the end.

On the page dedicated to professional licenses, UNIVGA presents 54 licenses, notably in data and computer science, web and mobile development, cybersecurity, business law, business management, human resources, digital marketing, logistics, environment, occupational health and safety, or Quality, Hygiene, Safety, Environment (QHSE). The site specifies that these licenses are awarded by ESGI and prepared in collaboration with UNIVGA.

Professional license: to build a degree pathway

This choice primarily suits candidates seeking a bachelor's degree, with academic progression and structured assessment. The license page mentions an online curriculum over three years, fundamentals, in-depth study, professional specialization, a thesis, and an oral defense via videoconference.

For a high school graduate, this is often the most straightforward path if the goal is to build an academic and professional portfolio over a complete cycle. For an employee, it may be suitable for returning to studies, but only if the available time and prerequisites align.

Professional certificate: to target a specific skill

The professional certificate addresses a different need: to progress in a specific area without necessarily entering a LMD degree. The FAQ page of UNIVGA indicates that certification programs provide a skills certificate, are open without prior diploma requirements, and do not constitute a university LMD degree.

This format often appeals to employees, entrepreneurs, job seekers, or professionals who want to document a skill in cybersecurity, management, compliance, logistics, finance, law, data, or public health. It remains insufficient if your primary goal is to obtain a license.

High school graduate: when the license becomes the logical choice

For a holder of the Bac, the main question is not just the field. It also concerns the type of proof expected in the medium term. If you want to pursue a master's degree afterward, present a bachelor's level diploma, or structure your training over several years, the professional license aligns better with this logic than an isolated certificate.

The License-Master-Doctorate (LMD) system organizes higher education into cycles. The Gabonese official journal notably recalls that the license corresponds to a standard pathway of six semesters and 180 credits. This reference does not resolve all questions of recognition from country to country, but it shows why a license and a skills certificate should not be placed on the same level.

The point of caution is administrative. The FAQ page of UNIVGA mentions that for degree programs such as a license or bachelor, documents such as the diploma or certificate of the Baccalauréat, an identity document, and a recent passport photo are required. Before you project yourself into a specialty, first check if your entry file is complete.

Employee: when the certificate may be more rational

For an employee, returning to a license is not always the most effective answer. If the issue is to better manage an audit, understand a standard, enhance a digital skill, supervise a team, or document a specialization, a professional certificate may suffice. The value then comes from the alignment between the content followed and the actual needs of the position.

UNIVGA describes its certification programs as more autonomous, with progression at one's own pace, without time constraints or imposed academic calendars. In contrast, degree programs are presented with more academic supervision: schedule, teachers, videoconferences, monitored assignments, and defense for the relevant levels. It is neither better nor worse. It is a difference in method.

However, be cautious with external certifications. In cybersecurity, UNIVGA offers preparations for EC-Council certifications. In compliance, pathways related to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards may prepare for professional processes, but ISO specifies that it does not conduct certifications itself and does not issue certificates. Certification is ensured by external certifying bodies.

What the choice does not yet say

Neither the license nor the certificate should be read as a promise of employment. The pages consulted do not provide insertion rates, success rates, dropout rates, or rankings to objectively compare outcomes. This does not detract from the value of the pathways but imposes a cautious reading.

The right decision, therefore, is to start from your main constraint. If you need a diploma, the certificate may lead to disappointment. If you need a targeted operational skill, a license may be too heavy as a first step. If you aim for a sector-specific certification, look closely at who trains, who evaluates, who certifies, and what final document will be issued.

What to check before deciding

  • Your primary objective: LMD degree, professional skill, preparation for an external exam, or simple exploration of a sector.
  • The organization that issues the final document: ESGI for the professional licenses indicated by UNIVGA, GROUPE UNIVGA for the skills certificates, external organization for certain certifications.
  • The entry prerequisites, notably the proof of the Baccalauréat for a license or bachelor.
  • The actual pace: autonomy of a certificate or academic supervision of a degree pathway.
  • The expected recognition in your country, your company, or your administration, to be verified with the relevant authorities or services.
  • The absence of confusion between training, certification, diploma, and recruitment: no training should be interpreted as a guarantee of employment.
