VAE, VAP or standard admission: avoid the wrong choice

Experience, resuming studies, foreign diploma: VAE, VAP/VAPP, and standard admission do not produce the same rights. Here are the useful checks. You have worked for several years, but you lack the required diploma to advance. One school talks to you about validation of acquired experience, another about derogatory access, a third about admission based on a file. The words are similar, but the legal effects are not.

To decide without confusing commercial promise and academic value, it is necessary to separate three pathways: validation of acquired experience (VAE), validation of professional experience (VAP) or validation of professional and personal experience (VAPP), and standard admission. The rules also change depending on the country: France, Gabon, African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES) or West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) do not overlap.

Pathway Real objective Expected decision Point of vigilance
VAE Recognize an experience to obtain all or part of a diploma, title, or certification. Jury: total validation, partial validation, or refusal. Request the certifier, the admissibility procedure, and the official basis.
VAP / VAPP Access a program without the normally required diploma. Authorization for registration or access to the program. This is not an automatic equivalence of the final diploma.
Standard admission Apply according to the ordinary rules of the institution. Admission, refusal, or waiting list depending on the file, competition, interview, or required title. Experience can help the file, but does not necessarily replace the prerequisite.
RNCP in France Identify a professional certification, its level, its certifier, its status, and its competency blocks. Active or inactive official sheet. A RNCP title is not automatically a national university diploma or a master's degree.
CAMES Examine the recognition or equivalence of diplomas in your area. Decision or registration verifiable according to directories and procedures. This is not an individual transnational VAE.

Three pathways, three different effects

The first selection is based on your objective. If you want to transform a professional, associative, or extracurricular experience into certification, you should look towards the VAE. In France, Service-Public specifies that this pathway concerns a professional certification registered in the RNCP: diploma, professional title, certificate of professional qualification, or blocks of skills. The experience must have a direct relation to the targeted certification.

If you mainly want to resume studies despite the absence of the normally required diploma, the relevant mechanism is rather the VAP 85 or VAPP in French higher education. The French Ministry of Higher Education indicates that it allows direct access to university training through the analysis of professional experience, training undertaken, and personal achievements. It opens a door; it does not grant the exit diploma.

Classical admission does not validate experience as a diploma. It applies the usual entry rules: prior diploma, application file, entrance exam, interview, capacity for reception, or national pre-registration procedure depending on the level and field. In this context, your background can strengthen the application, but the institution judges according to its own published criteria.

VAE: aiming for certification

The procedure generally includes a step of admissibility, a validation file, and a presentation before a jury. The jury can grant the certification, grant it partially with recommendations, or refuse. A partial validation may concern certain blocks of skills.

VAPP: aiming for entry into training

The decision concerns your ability to follow a training course without the usual access diploma. After admission, you will still need to follow the curriculum, validate the units or skills required, and comply with the study regulations.

France: beware of similar-sounding words

In France, the VAE is linked to an identified professional certification, notably via the RNCP for professional certifications. Before paying for support or submitting a file, check the exact title, the certifying body, the level, the active status of the record, and the blocks of skills. France compétences reminds that the recognition of a professional certification should not be confused with a national university diploma.

One point deserves direct verification with the certifying body: Service-Public, page verified in 2026, indicates that it is no longer necessary to justify at least one year of experience to engage in a VAE. The ministry's page dedicated to VAE and VAP 85 in higher education still mentions a condition of at least one year of experience. In case of discrepancies between public pages, the applicable rule must be confirmed by the certifying institution and by the text in force for the targeted certification.

Another frequent confusion: the words "level", "grade", and "diploma". A title such as Bachelor, Master of Science (MSc), or Master of Arts (MA) may correspond to international or school usages. In France, the useful question is more precise: is it a national diploma, a license or master grade, an RNCP title, or an institutional diploma? These categories do not have the same effects for further studies, competitions, or administrative recognition.

Gabon, CAMES, UEMOA: do not import French rules

In Gabon, the Official Journal publishes decree n°0529/PR/MFPIJ of October 13, 2015, which regulates the consideration of VAE. The text presents it as an individual right allowing the validation of professional experience by a jury, with a view to obtaining a partial or total diploma or professional certification. It also specifies that the diploma, certificate, or title issued by VAE must not include any mention indicating the VAE.

This Gabonese framework does not mean that French tools apply locally. The RNCP, France VAE, or French funding rules fall under the French system. For Gabon, the priority questions are: what national text regulates certification? which ministry or organization is competent? which jury decides? what diploma or title is actually issued? At this stage, no consolidated public data has been found on the number of candidates, success rates, or the operational use of VAE in Gabonese universities.

In the UEMOA area, the 2007 directive concerns the adoption of the LMD system in universities and higher education institutions of the Union. It organizes the architecture of License, Master, Doctorate, and credits. It does not create a unique regional VAE. CAMES, for its part, intervenes on the recognition and equivalence of diplomas according to academic and institutional criteria. It is not an individual procedure for validating your professional experience.

And what if my diploma comes from another country?

The right reflex is to identify the decision you need. To pursue studies, the host institution may examine the level, content, access conditions, and credits. For a competition, an administration, or a professional order, a formal equivalence may be required. For an employer, the readability of the diploma and the institution may count, but it does not replace official recognition when it is mandatory.

Do not mechanically transpose acronyms. Recognition of acquired skills in Quebec, valorization of acquired skills in French-speaking Belgium, a French VAE, and a Gabonese procedure may pursue similar objectives but produce different decisions: admission, exemption, credits, blocks, or diploma. Always read the regulations of the concerned country and institution.

The marketing signals to question

A serious school should be able to state exactly what it delivers and on what basis. Beware of vague phrases like "diploma by experience" without an identified jury, "recognized by the State" without a number, decree, or verifiable record, or "CAMES" used as a mere advertising argument. CAMES recognition is verified diploma by diploma when the argument is made.

The mention "master level" also requires careful reading. A level of certification or a claim of Bac+5 does not automatically correspond to a national master diploma or a master grade. For international MSc and MA, it is necessary to verify the country of issuance, the authority that recognizes the institution, the access conditions, the actual duration of the program, and the possibilities for further studies.

How to phrase it on a curriculum vitae (CV)

The wording should follow the official decision you possess, without broadening it.

  • Diploma obtained by VAE: "[Exact title of the diploma], obtained through validation of acquired experience, [certifying body], [year]."
  • Partial validation: "Partial validation of [diploma or blocks], decision of the jury of [date], [certifying body]."
  • VAPP granted: "Admission to [training] through validation of professional and personal achievements, [institution], [year]."
  • Classical admission: "Admitted to [training] based on application, entrance exam, or required title, [institution], [year]."

To avoid without proof: writing "master obtained" if only a VAPP has been granted, "diploma recognized by CAMES" without verifiable decision, or "RNCP level 7 = master" without specifying the exact nature of the title.

True or false: frequent confusions

  • « VAE is like taking classes as a regular student. » False. VAE is based on a portfolio of experience and a jury, although a supplement may be recommended.
  • « VAPP allows entry into a training program without the normally required diploma. » True, in France. This is the purpose of the validation of professional and personal achievements in higher education.
  • « A VAPP directly grants the diploma. » False. It provides access to training; the diploma then requires completing the curriculum.
  • « A VAE can lead to partial validation. » True. The jury can grant part of the certification and make recommendations.
  • « The LMD UEMOA is a regional VAE. » False. The LMD organizes the structure of degrees and credits, not an individual validation of experience.

What to check before deciding

  • The exact objective: to obtain a diploma through experience, enter training, or apply through the regular route.
  • The applicable country and framework: France, Gabon, another state, CAMES space or UEMOA do not follow the same rules.
  • The final document issued: national diploma, professional title, certificate, skill blocks, access authorization, or simple attestation.
  • The certifying body or responsible institution, with an official verifiable proof.
  • For France: active RNCP sheet, level, blocks, certifier, and distinction with a national diploma or degree.
  • For Francophone Africa: national authorization, accreditation, CAMES recognition if invoked, and registration in available directories.
  • The composition or existence of the jury for a VAE, as well as the admissibility and validation steps.
  • Practical consequences: continuation of studies, competitions, international mobility, professional recognition, or simple admission to training.
