You have a license, a bachelor’s degree, or a Bac+3 diploma, and several schools promise you a 'master's' leading to good positions. The problem starts here: the same word can refer to different realities depending on the country, the status of the diploma, the specialization, and the authority that recognizes it.
To decide, you need to go back to the evidence: the License-Master-Doctorate (LMD) framework, national authorization, official specialization, track, internships, thesis, possible accreditation from the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES), or registration in the National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP) in France.

The term master does not resolve the issue of the degree.
First reflex: ask what will be written on the final diploma. In France, the national master's degree confers the master's grade and the use of the title is regulated. However, other offerings may use similar titles, sometimes with different statuses: targeted degree, degree conferring grade, certification registered with the RNCP, establishment certificate.
This point also concerns international titles. A Master of Science (MSc) or a Master of Arts (MA) may correspond, in its country, to a master's level degree. This does not automatically mean it produces the same legal effects in France, Gabon, or another country. The question is therefore not only the prestige of the acronym, but the authority that recognizes the degree, the actual level, and the rights it opens.
The same caution applies after a bachelor's degree. In some English-speaking countries, a bachelor's degree is an undergraduate degree. In other contexts, the term may cover more varied statuses. To apply for a master's program, the institution will look at academic coherence, the level achieved, credits, transcripts, and prerequisites, not just the marketing title.
Mention, track, country: the order of decision after Bac+3.
The right question is not just 'which master's program to choose?', but 'which mention corresponds to my background and my project?'. In the French context, the title of a degree is based on a field and a mention. The track then specifies an orientation. In Gabon, the decree on the LMD also defines the mention as a breakdown of a training field.
A degree in economics does not mechanically lead to the same master's programs as a degree in management, mathematics, law, or sociology. Committees often look at prerequisites, the units of study completed, grades in core subjects, internships, professional projects, or research projects.
If your priority is employment.
Look at internships, work-study programs, supervised projects, professional speakers, verifiable partnerships, and the emphasis placed on technical skills. Request published employment surveys, including year, method, and scope. For reliable and primary Gabonese data on salaries or employment rates in the sources consulted here: not found.
If your priority is research.
Look at the teaching team, researchers, the laboratory, the thesis, seminars, and opportunities for pursuing a doctorate. A research-oriented track is not judged solely by its name: an identifiable academic environment and methodological requirements are necessary.
France, Gabon, UEMOA: what changes in verification.
In France, the Mon Master platform allows you to search for programs by field, mention, track, institution, modality, degree obtained, and location. It serves as a useful reference for national master's degrees. For other offerings, verify the exact status: national degree, targeted degree, master's grade, RNCP certification, or certificate.
In Gabon, the LMD framework is officially provided for universities and higher education institutions. This gives a reference architecture but does not exempt you from verifying the institution's authorization, the exact title of the degree, any national accreditation, and the program's registration in the CAMES directory if announced.
In the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the LMD directive harmonizes the general framework: semesters, transferable and capitalizable credits, standard tracks, diploma supplement. This harmonization does not automatically validate every training offer. A school can communicate about the LMD while leaving you to verify separately the national recognition and the recognition of the program.
And what if my diploma comes from another country?
For pursuing studies in France with a foreign degree, there is no automatic legal equivalence. The ENIC-NARIC France center can issue a comparability certificate, but the university or school remains responsible for its admission decision. Prepare transcripts, course descriptions, credits, official translations, and proof of recognition in the country of origin.
For Canada, Europe outside France, English-speaking countries, or a non-French-speaking African country, start from the same principle: first verify the local recognition of the degree, then its comparability in the country where you want to study or work. An MSc or an MA may be perfectly legitimate in its home system while requiring specific analysis elsewhere.
Promises to question before paying.
"A degree called a master is necessarily recognized."
False. It is necessary to identify the recognition authority: ministry, CAMES, France Compétences, competent public institution, or other official body.
"A professional track guarantees a job."
False. It may prepare for employment through internships, projects, and skills, but training does not replace the job market or recruitment procedures.
"A research master's only serves to become a teacher-researcher."
False. It can lead to a doctorate, applied research, expertise, or other functions depending on the field. Opportunities must be sourced on a case-by-case basis.
"CAMES automatically recognizes all degrees from a school."
False. Verification must focus on the specific degree, with its title, level, and, if possible, the year of accreditation.
How to present the master's degree on a CV
To prioritize: Master's degree, mention [official title], track [title], [institution], [country], [year of graduation]. Thesis or project: [title]. Internship or work-study: [organization], [mission], [skills].
To avoid: « internationally recognized master's degree everywhere » without official mention, without level, without recognition authority, and without verifiable proof.
What to check before deciding
- The exact title of the degree: field, mention, track, level, institution, country.
- The status: national diploma, targeted diploma, master's degree grade, RNCP certification, nationally recognized diploma, possible CAMES accreditation.
- The coherence with your Bac+3: prerequisites, subjects taken, credits, language level, professional project or research project.
- The actual content: curriculum, hourly volumes, internships, thesis, projects, teachers, laboratory or partners.
- The modalities: initial training, continuing education, work-study, distance learning, schedule compatible with a job.
- The evidence of job prospects: published survey, methodology, year, scope. If no reliable source is provided, note: not found.
- The effects in the targeted country: public competitions, regulated professions, continuation to a doctorate, international mobility, recognition by employers.
