Returning to studies after 30: choosing wisely

Returning to studies after 30 or 40 is possible, but the right choice depends on your experience, work pace, and diploma recognition. A meeting at 8 AM, family obligations in the evening, securing a budget: returning to studies after 30 or 40 rarely hinges solely on motivation. The real risk is choosing an appealing program from a brochure that is incompatible with your schedule or insufficiently recognized for your goal.

Between traditional enrollment, Validation of Acquired Experience (VAE), evening courses, and distance learning, options exist. They do not produce the same effects. Before paying registration fees, it is essential to identify the right system, the exact status of the diploma, and the authority that recognizes it, in France, Gabon, or the Francophone African region.

Bachelor, license, master, MBA: what are the differences?

Reader's situation Path to examine Point of vigilance
You have several years of experience in the field of the targeted diploma VAE Check the reference framework, the certifying authority, the procedure, the jury, and possible outcomes: total validation, partial validation, or refusal.
You are changing careers or sectors Traditional enrollment or continuing education Compare prerequisites, calendar, evaluations, internships, and daytime constraints.
You work full-time FOAD, hybrid, evening courses Request the actual schedule, gatherings, exams, tutoring, and diploma recognition in distance modality.
You do not have the required entry diploma VAP 85 in France, equivalent local system to verify The decision may open access to training, without exempting from exams of the curriculum.
The diploma is presented as international Institutional verification Ask whether it is a national diploma, a degree, a title registered in the National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP), a CAMES accreditation, or an establishment certificate.

Choose between VAE, traditional enrollment, and distance learning

Age is not the main criterion. The right question is: does your experience already match the skills of the targeted degree, or do you need to learn a new field? In France, official sources clearly distinguish between VAE, which aims for certification, and VAP 85, which can allow entry into higher education without possessing the normally required diploma.

When VAE is worth considering

It can be relevant if your actual activities correspond to the diploma's reference framework. It does not automatically convert seniority into a diploma. You must provide evidence, follow a procedure, and appear before an evaluation body. The result can be total, partial, or negative.

When traditional enrollment remains more solid

It is often more suitable for a career change, a long-term upgrade, or a diploma requiring teachings that your experience does not cover. In return, it imposes a schedule, regular assessments, and sometimes mandatory attendance.

The employee rhythm: the detail that often decides

A training compatible with employment is not limited to evening classes. You need to know the exam weeks, mandatory gatherings, group work, possible internships, thesis submission deadlines, and resit procedures. Distance learning can reduce travel, but it requires a reliable connection, autonomy, pedagogical support, and personal study time.

Campus France notably distinguishes between open online courses, more structured formats, and distance training. These formats do not all have the same degree-granting significance. A certificate of completion, a paid certification, and a recognized diploma do not meet the same need on a CV or for further studies.

Diploma recognition: reading beyond marketing

The terms Bachelor, mastère, Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), or Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) are not sufficient to establish the academic value of a program. Internationally, MSc or MA may correspond to university degrees recognized in certain systems. In France, the status depends on the precise legal framework: national diploma, targeted diploma, grade, RNCP title, or establishment certificate. In French-speaking Africa, it is also necessary to look at national authorization and, if claimed, recognition by the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES).

The Diploma Recognition and Equivalence Program (PRED) of CAMES focuses on diplomas or programs according to a procedure. Being located in a CAMES member country does not mean that all fields, all promotions, and all modalities, including distance, are automatically covered.

Gabon, UEMOA, CAMES: useful references

In Gabon, the law on higher education provides for the opening of continuing education to individuals engaged or not in active life. The country also has a text related to the consideration of VAE. This does not exempt from verifying, diploma by diploma, the competent authority, the certifying institution, and the effective application of the procedure.

In the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the 2007 directive adopts the License-Master-Doctorate (LMD) system as a reference framework. This framework facilitates the reading of levels, but it does not replace concrete verification: national accreditation, program recognition, concerned cohort, training site, and in-person, hybrid, or distance mode.

And what if my diploma comes from another country?

A foreign diploma must be examined according to the intended use: recruitment, competitions, further studies, academic equivalence, or professional recognition. The right approach is to request the official title of the diploma, the name of the certifying institution, the country of accreditation, the declared level, and verifiable evidence: decree, public directory, RNCP sheet for France, CAMES directory when invoked, or document from the competent national authority.

Caution is even more necessary for private training presented as international. A school may be authorized to operate without each diploma having the same academic recognition. A training may also be recognized in one country, without automatically producing the same effects in another.

Myths to dismiss

True: you can resume studies while being employed, but funding, absences, and pace must be verified before enrollment.

True: VAE can lead to total, partial validation, or refusal.

False: a distance training is automatically easier. It is mainly organized differently.

False: a school located in a CAMES member country necessarily has all its diplomas recognized by CAMES.

False: a French RNCP title always equates to a national diploma of license or master. You must read the exact status of the certification.

Presenting a return to studies on the CV

Continuing education / return to studies
Diploma or certification: [exact title]
Certifying institution: [official name]
Country / recognition authority: [State, ministry, CAMES, RNCP if France]
Modality: [in-person / hybrid / distance]
Status: [obtained / in progress / eligible for VAE / partial validation]
Verifiable document: [decree, certificate, RNCP sheet, CAMES directory, diploma]

What to check before deciding

  • Is the diploma national, accredited, awarded a degree, registered with the RNCP, recognized by CAMES, or is it a school certificate or an attestation?
  • Is the institution authorized by the competent authority of the country where it operates?
  • Does the recognition apply to the institution in general or to the specific diploma you are targeting?
  • Is the distance or hybrid modality covered by the announced recognition?
  • Is the actual schedule compatible with your job, travel, and family obligations?
  • Are the exams conducted remotely, in person, or in a mixed format?
  • Is the VAE open for this specific diploma, with a written procedure and an identified authority?
  • Are the fees, deferrals, withdrawals, refunds, and examination conditions included in a contract or regulation?
  • Are the promises of employment, salary, or integration supported by official sources or verifiable documents? If not, consider them as unestablished.
