Online training: avoid vague degrees before registration

Before paying for online training, check the school, the program, the degree, the level, the FOAD, the CAMES, and the legal mentions. A brochure promises a recognized degree, 100% online courses, and quick registration. For a student, an employee returning to study, or a recent graduate, the question is not just whether the program seems modern. It is necessary to identify who teaches, who authorizes, who controls, and who issues the final document.

The most common trap lies in the confusion between commercial communication, opening authorization, program accreditation, degree recognition, academic grade, and quality accreditation. Here is a useful verification method before paying fees, sending your documents, or adding a line to your CV.

Criterion to verify Expected proof What this allows us to understand If proof is lacking
Legal existence of the establishment Decree, approval, authorization, order, official register according to the country The organization exists legally and can be identified Note: not found, and request an official reference
Authorization of the program Text mentioning the exact title, level, and sometimes the site or modality The school is not just open; the announced training is documented Do not deduce the authorization of a program solely from the school's status
Precise name of the diploma Bachelor's, master's, doctorate, institutional diploma, bachelor, MSc, MA, MBA, certificate, professional title You know what will actually be awarded Beware of vague phrases like 'internationally recognized diploma'
Academic degree Decision, decree, visa, accreditation, or official reference You distinguish between level of study, program title, and degree A bac+3 or bac+5 level is not enough to prove a degree
CAMES/PRED recognition Line in the directory or CAMES document with diploma, institution, year, and remarks You verify regional recognition when it is announced Note: CAMES recognition not found
Organization of distance learning Platform, tutoring, schedule, forums, resources, exercises, digital library Distance training relies on a system, not just on files sent Request the educational booklet and access conditions
Assessments Continuous assessment, exams, defense, thesis, resits, identity verification You understand how skills are validated Risk of a diploma that is difficult to defend with an employer or another university
Legal notices of the site Company name, address, phone, host, general conditions, personal data The publisher of the site and the seller of the training are identifiable Avoid paying before written clarification
External controls Ministry, quality agency, CAMES, Hcéres, CTI, CEFDG or other competent authority You identify who controls what A logo alone does not constitute an official decision
Job or salary promises Calculation method, period, observed population, public source You distinguish documented results from sales arguments Without a reliable source, write: not found

Authorization, degree, recognition: three different questions

To investigate an online training program, start by separating the levels of evidence. The legal existence of the institution answers a first question: does the organization have the right to exist and teach in its country? In Gabon, private education is subject to authorization, opening permission, pedagogical control, and state supervision. This does not replace the verification of each program.

The second question concerns the announced diploma. A school may offer several programs with different statuses: national diploma, institutional diploma, recognized diploma, professional certification, certificate, bachelor, MSc, MA or MBA. The third question concerns the degree: bachelor's, master's or doctorate in the License-Master-Doctorate (LMD) system. In the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the LMD directive notably retains 180 credits for the bachelor's degree, 300 for the master's degree, and 480 for the doctorate. Gabon is not a member of UEMOA, but this reference helps to understand the regional vocabulary without replacing the applicable national law.

What communication often says

“International diploma,” “recognized by the state,” “partner of a university,” “certifying training,” “bachelor equivalent to a license”: these expressions can be true, imprecise, or misleading depending on the case. They must always refer to an identifiable authority, a text, and an exact title.

What the file must show

An official link, a decree, a decision, a registration sheet, a ministerial page, or a line in a recognized directory. The proof must mention the country, the institution, the training, the diploma, the year, and, if necessary, the observations.

Distance learning and CAMES: a distance training must be organized

Distance learning is not limited to a video or a messaging group. The CAMES framework on online training offerings describes a system with pedagogical organization, learner services, support, tutoring, exercises, forums, or simulations. In other words, seriousness is reflected in daily operations: schedule, platform, access to resources, availability of teachers, monitoring methods, and evaluation procedures.

If a school announces CAMES recognition, check the Diploma Recognition and Equivalence Program (PRED) and the directory of recognized African diplomas. The search must focus on the exact name of the diploma, the concerned institution, and the year. Recognition obtained for another diploma, another level, or another period should not be generalized.

Bachelor, MSc, MA: beware of words that travel

International vocabulary circulates faster than legal frameworks. A bachelor can refer to an institutional diploma, a foreign diploma, or a program recognized in a particular system. In France, some recognized diplomas may be accompanied by a bachelor's or master's degree, but this is not automatic. The right reflex is to check the official training sheet and the rights attached to the diploma, instead of directly translating a title.

The same reasoning applies to MSc, MA, and MBA. In some countries, they fall under recognized universities and a precise academic framework. In other contexts, they may refer to a program specific to the institution. In France, private higher education institutions cannot solely issue national diplomas for bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degrees. Depending on the case, it is necessary to check a visa, a degree, an agreement, an authorization from the Commission des titres d’ingénieur (CTI), a recognition from the Commission d’évaluation des formations et diplômes de gestion (CEFDG), an entry in the Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles (RNCP), or another competent decision.

And what if my diploma comes from another country?

The principle remains the same: start from the country that issues the diploma, then from the country where you want to use it. Recognition in one country does not always produce the same effects for pursuing studies, taking an exam, obtaining equivalence, or convincing an employer elsewhere. For French-speaking Africa, first check national authorization, then any CAMES/PRED recognition. For France, check the official databases according to the type of diploma: ministry, Onisep, France compétences, CTI or CEFDG.

In Gabon, the country is a member of CAMES and national law regulates private education. However, a comprehensive and updated public list of authorized online training programs in Gabon has not been found in the sources consulted for this article. This reinforces the importance of asking the institution for written and verifiable references, and then checking them with the competent authorities.

True or false: costly misconceptions

“An authorized private school is necessarily authorized for all its programs.” False. You must verify the institution and each program.

“An online training can be serious.” True. It must then present a documented pedagogical, technical, evaluation, and control framework.

“Distance learning means recognized diploma.” False. Distance learning describes a training modality, not automatic recognition.

« Master's degree and bac+5 level are always identical. » False. The grade, the diploma, and the issuing authority must be verified separately.

« CAMES recognition is verified based on the exact title of the diploma. » True. The institution, year, and observations must also match.

How to formulate recognition on a CV

After official verification, a cautious line can take this form: Master [exact title]: [institution], [country], diploma recognized CAMES/PRED, year [year indicated in the directory], verified on [date].

If you cannot find proof in a directory or an official decision, do not invent an equivalence. Write in your personal file: CAMES recognition: not found, then request written confirmation from the institution and the competent authority.

What to check before deciding

  • The institution exists legally in its country and its legal identity corresponds to the site that collects the fees.
  • The program, level, and online modality are explicitly authorized or documented.
  • The final diploma is named unambiguously: national diploma, institutional diploma, bachelor, MSc, MA, MBA, certificate, professional title, or other.
  • The announced grade, bachelor's, master's, or doctorate, is proven by an official decision when claimed.
  • CAMES/PRED recognition is verified in the directory or in an official document, with the same title.
  • The FOAD includes a platform, tutoring, resources, a calendar, exchanges, and identifiable support.
  • Exams, defenses, theses, retakes, and issuance conditions are explained before payment.
  • The site displays complete legal mentions: company name, address, contact, host, sales conditions, and personal data.
  • Logos, partnerships, and labels link to official pages, not just an image in a brochure.
  • Promises of employment, salary, visa, or integration are supported by a reliable source. Otherwise, consider them as not found.
