License 1, often abbreviated as L1, is the first year of the university degree cycle in France. It marks the beginning of higher education after obtaining the baccalaureate. This year is crucial for students as it lays the foundation for their academic and professional journey. License 1 is generally structured around a common core of fundamental subjects, which vary according to the chosen field, whether it be sciences, humanities, law, economics, or other disciplines.
Students in License 1 attend lectures, tutorials (TD), and sometimes practical work (TP), depending on the nature of their program. The main objective of this year is to acquire solid theoretical knowledge and develop essential methodological skills for the continuation of their studies. Assessments are often conducted in the form of continuous assessments and final exams.
In addition to disciplinary teachings, License 1 often includes modules on academic methodology to help students adapt to the demands of higher education, as well as courses in modern languages to enhance their linguistic skills. This year is also an opportunity for students to start reflecting on their professional orientation and consider internships or personal projects that will enrich their academic journey.
