Management is the implementation of human and material resources of a company to achieve its objectives. It corresponds to the idea of management and steering applied to a company or a unit of it. When it concerns the entire company, it can generally be equated with the management function.
Business management consists of:
- Setting objectives (strategic and operational),
- Choosing the means to achieve them,
- Implementing these means (seeking efficiency),
- Controlling the implementation and the results obtained,
- Ensuring regulation based on this control (governance).
It includes a technical dimension focused on optimizing resources and a human dimension related to the need to obtain motivation and cooperation from the members of the organization.
According to Maurice Obadia, it is mistakenly believed that the term management contains the "radical man" (the man), which would therefore be at the center of management. But it is rather the "radical Latin manus" (the hand) that it contains which is at the center. Thus, "Manus – agere (to act)," it is inextricably linking the hand and action. The word actually has the same root as "manege" (which was driven by hand).
