Job description
The strategic monitoring officer is somewhat of a specialized documentalist in tracking, collecting, and analyzing sensitive information. Thanks to this information gathering and especially the analysis he/she conducts, the company will be enlightened and supported in its strategic choices and decision-making.
Technological, economic, competitive, partnership monitoring… The strategic monitoring officer can ensure surveillance in various fields.
Upstream, the strategic monitor develops and defines a monitoring plan. He/she identifies the themes and research topics in light of the established objectives, validates the documentary sources as well as the search parameters. The information collected is then processed, analyzed before being disseminated to the decision-making poles of the company (commercial management, marketing management, innovation management…).
The strategic monitoring officer mastery of monitoring tools and digital content management. He/she must also possess good analytical and synthesis skills and writing abilities.
The strategic monitoring officer works in large industrial companies (automotive, aerospace, agri-food, biotechnology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals…) or services (banking, insurance…) as well as in administrations. Most often, he/she is attached to a strategy department or a prospective department.
He/she can also work on behalf of a specialized consulting firm or operate as an independent.
The monitoring function is experiencing strong development and offers opportunities, especially in the field of competitive monitoring.
Studies / Training to become Strategic Monitoring Officer
While the position of strategic monitoring officer is accessible with a bachelor's degree, the vast majority of strategic monitoring officers have a master's degree (bac + 5). In some very specialized fields, a dual competence is sometimes required (strategic monitoring + expertise in the field of activity). Examples of training:
