Studying while working: organizing your time without mistakes

Employee or returning to studies? Check rhythm, employer, FOAD, and diploma status before enrolling, without a promise of automatic advancement. In the brochure, the schedule seems compatible with a professional life. Then come the exams during the week, the mandatory internship, the thesis to submit, and sometimes an in-person defense. For an employee, a student financing their studies, or a young graduate already in a position, the real issue is not just motivation: it’s the written proof of what will be required.

In Gabon, as in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the License-Master-Doctorate (LMD) system organizes courses into semesters, teaching units, and credits. But these credits refer to a total workload. Studying while working therefore implies negotiating three realities: your time, your professional obligations, and the academic requirements of the diploma.

VAE, VAP or standard admission: avoid the wrong choice

Point to compare What the school often announces What you need to obtain in writing
Rhythm Compatible with active individuals, evening classes, weekends, or online Complete calendar: classes, exams, retakes, gatherings, internships, thesis, defense
FOAD 100% online training Evaluation modalities, exam supervision, tutoring, platform, possible attendance
Degree International, recognized, bachelor’s or master’s level Official title, issuing authority, accreditation, national recognition, CAMES recognition if claimed
Employer Training possible alongside work Absence rules, necessary agreement, justifications, impact on schedules and professional obligations

The real rhythm is reflected in the calendar, not in the slogan

A training program can be serious and yet difficult to follow with a full-time job. The first check is therefore on the detailed calendar. Ask for the dates of synchronous classes, exam periods, retakes, gatherings, internships, project submissions, and the defense. A 'flexible' schedule is not enough if evaluations fall during your working hours.

The Gabonese decree on the LMD reminds us that credits take into account the total workload required of the student. This workload includes teaching, personal work, internships, theses, projects, and other activities. In other words, working in parallel does not mechanically lighten the diploma's requirements.

What you can organize

Your reading schedules, your interim submissions, your exchanges with teachers, your revisions, your budget, and your weekly pace.

What needs to be negotiated or verified

Professional absences, in-person exams, internships, travel, thesis defense, deadlines for deferral, and the consequences of a delay.

Employer: talk early, but with precise documents

If the training takes place entirely outside of working hours, the organization remains mostly personal. However, as soon as an exam, a gathering, an internship, or a thesis defense affects your professional schedule, the subject also becomes legal and managerial. In Gabon, the Labor Code integrates professional training, continuing education, and retraining into the national education, qualification, and employment system. However, it is essential to verify the rules applicable to your situation: contract, internal regulations, collective agreement, employer's policy, or mobilized public system.

The French comparison is useful, but not automatically transferable. In France, for the Compte personnel de formation (CPF), Service-Public.fr indicates that training undertaken outside of working hours does not require the employer's consent, while training during working hours does require this consent. This distinction helps to ask the right question: does your training really remain outside of work?

FOAD: distance does not mean absence of requirements

FOAD can help an employee limit travel and better distribute their personal work. However, it must be examined as a complete training offer, not as a mere commercial promise. The African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES) notably publishes a framework for the accreditation of FOAD offers, which shows that distance also concerns pedagogical organization, supervision, evaluation, and quality evidence.

Before enrolling, ask how candidates' identities are verified, where exams take place, who grades, how tutoring works, what the internship conditions are, and whether the thesis defense is online or in person. A serious FOAD should be able to answer these questions unambiguously.

The status of the diploma: beware of words that reassure too quickly

The words "recognized", "international", "Bachelor", "Master of Science (MSc)", "Master of Arts (MA)", "Master of Business Administration (MBA)", or "mastère" do not all mean the same thing depending on the countries. In some systems, Bachelor, MSc, or MA are common academic titles. In France, it is necessary to distinguish between the commercial or international name of a program, the national diploma, the grade, the targeted diploma, and the professional certification.

The National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP) concerns professional certifications registered in France. France compétences recommends checking the active file, the certifying organization, and the authorization of the organization preparing for the certification. This does not automatically mean a national university diploma or a master's degree. Similarly, Onisep reminds us that a diploma recognized by the French state concerns a specific training, for a limited duration, and not all training from a school.

In the CAMES area, the Recognition and Equivalence of Diplomas Program (PRED) is based on scientific, pedagogical, and institutional evaluation. If a school announces CAMES recognition, ask where it can be verified: directory, certificate, decision, or official reference.

And what if my diploma comes from another country?

Recognition depends on the country that issues it, the country where you want to work or continue your studies, and sometimes the professional sector. A diploma from France, Canada, Morocco, Senegal, or Europe does not automatically produce the same effects in Gabon, in UEMOA, or in another French-speaking African state.

Your reflex should be to separate three questions: does the diploma officially exist in its country of origin? Is the institution or organization authorized to issue it? Does the authority of the country where you want to use it accept this diploma, or does it require equivalence? Without a specific target country, there is no reliable general answer.

True / false: misconceptions to be dismissed

"FOAD means less work." False. Distance changes the modality, not necessarily the academic load.
"A LMD diploma eliminates internships or theses." False. Credits take into account the total workload, which can include internships, theses, and projects.
"If I am an employee, the employer must always accept my absences." Not found as a general rule for Gabon in the consulted sources. The rules must be verified according to your situation.
"Recognized by a school and recognized by the state is the same thing." False. It is necessary to identify the authority that recognizes the diploma or certification.
"Recognized CAMES must be verifiable." True. An announced recognition must refer to a consultable or transferable proof.

On the CV: present the diploma without amplifying it

Training
[Exact title of the diploma] — [Establishment or certifying organization]
[Modality: in-person, hybrid, or FOAD] — [Year of obtaining or "in progress"]
Verified status: [national diploma, targeted diploma, RNCP certification, CAMES recognition, establishment diploma, other documented status]
Thesis or project: [actual title, if relevant]
Internship: [yes/no, according to the educational regulations]

Avoid converting a certificate, diploma, or certification into a degree of another level if the official document does not indicate it.

What to check before deciding

  • The exact title that will appear on the diploma, certificate, or certification.
  • The authority issuing it: ministry, university, school, certifying body, or academic partner.
  • The announced national recognition, with text, decree, authorization, or official sheet.
  • CAMES recognition if mentioned, with proof from PRED or a verifiable document.
  • The complete schedule: courses, exams, retakes, internship, thesis, defense, and gatherings.
  • FOAD modalities: platform, tutoring, identity verification, exam supervision, access to teachers.
  • The consequences of a professional absence: employer agreement, leave, postponement, justification, or possible refusal.
  • Additional fees: registration, platform, exams, retakes, defense, diploma, postponement, or reimbursement.
